Fiction S.S.R

I read a book called The Boy And The Cherry Tree. My favourite part was when the boy swam across the river, when he got across the river there was no cherry tree someone had cut down. I thought it was really funny because he swam so hard to get to the other side. The message that the boy sets goals for himself and never gives up. The author is Mark and Rowan Sommerest.

S.S.R Poems

For the S.S.R challenge this week I read this book. I had to read 10 poems out of it. My favourite poem was called Rio Carnival. I like this the most because I could picture it happening in my head and because it was the only one that had some rhyming in it.

S.S.R Picture Book

I like this book because it teases your brain and it looks like the pictures are moving. My favourite one was one that had a love heart in the middle of it and the rest was blue and it looked like the picture was like a flag, at the top of the page it would have the instructions what to do to see the moving page. The book was called Movement Illusions, the picture was called Beating Heart.

Moving To New Zealand

Moving To New Zealand

So it was the start of 2020 and there was this virus going around and my friend
Coco (her real name is Chloe but Coco for short) was moving from London to
New Zealand, Greymouth.

Coco’s big blue eyes went so well with her wavy blond hair. She was born in
France so she carries a slight French accent and it makes her sound like her nose
is blocked when she is speaking. Her voice is very soft and sweet but powerful at
the same time.

Choe is my mum's friend's daughter. After a few weeks of enduring a rising case
rate we had to go into lockdown and the poor girl got really scared because she
had only just moved here 7 weeks ago. Coco felt really homesick. We were on the
phone for a long time.

We were talking about our families and we were getting to know each other really
well and we were telling each other what we liked. And what we would do
together when we got out of lockdown. I turned the news on to get an update on
the virus and it was saying there were too many cars on the road and people were
going out too much. The cases were increasing every day.

I asked Coco if she had spoken to her mum. Coco said, “No.” I thought it was a bit
weird. Coco was talking about how homesick she felt. But she didn't want to ring
her mum and dad for some reason.

My family, her on the phone and I were watching the news on the TV and America
had over 1 million cases. I thought to myself that the virus was spreading from
one to another like dominos being knocked down.

Coco’s birthday was the next day. Coco really wanted her own pony so for her
birthday my family bought her a pony (before lock down) called Spot. He was a
big paint (brown and white) full height pony. I told her the day before her
birthday(today). She was so excited to have her own pony.

An hour had passed, her and I were talking about, spot and how nice he is.
Coco was so excited about coming and seeing him when we were in level 3.
But we were still in level 4. We just finished touring each other's houses on
face time.

She was living with her mum's friends called Bobby and Ben. They are really nice
people and took care of her really well. I had a look at how long our call was and
it was 4 hours long. It was really fun talking to her though.

I was out riding with Coco still on the phone and I had a fun ride with her on the
phone and I wished she was riding with me and Coco on her pony. Coco said
“I wish I was there to see Spot and you.” And I said “yea I would love you to come
up and ride.”

I got so excited when we all moved out of level 4. I asked her what it is like in
London. She said, “It was hard because it is so busy over in London.” I was saying,
“It is really calm in Greymouth and a lot less busy than London.”

We talked a lot more and did our work at the same time. Time flew and all of a
sudden it was time for tea. Coco had to go for tea so I said, “Bye” and she was
gone. I felt lonely again.

Hurias Quality By Billie

Huria

One spring morning in the middle of a gigantic storm at Wakapuaka, Huria and her husband were at the beach. They saw a ship bashing from side to side against the rocks.

She didn't like seeing the sailor in distress and thought to herself I MUST SAVE THEM. She threw her cloak (korowai)  on the beach.

Huria could hear the sailors calling. Huria dived into the ferocious water, her family couldn't believe her bravery. She swam so hard and battled through huge waves to help get to the ship. Huria risked her life to help the pakeha.

I think Huria was a very brave woman. She was a great woman at the time of the wars between pakeha and Māori.

I think that Huria was kind because she was the type of person who liked to help other people in distress. When each pakeha sailor came to shore they were wrapped in her cloak to keep warm. When she saw Henry not make it to shore Huria was so sad even though she had saved many others.

Huria’s bond between the Māori and the pakeha wove a strong bond that day - just like the bond between the wool and the flax in her cloak.

This Is Just To Say

This Is Just To Say

I have coloured myself in with pens
The coloured pens were hard to get off
There were dark colours
And we wasted a lot of pens
We were not having the best time trying to clean it off before you got up
Probably not the best idea but it was fun
Forgive me for doing it
They were hard to get off
So stubborn
And so I will try not to do it again

Scavenger Hunt

Sea week
WALT understand earth systems.
Context: moon, tides, ocean currents
Name:Billie
Questions Worksheet
Fact Card#1: How does water move on the surface of ocean? The water in the ocean is constantly moving. On the surface, water moves in the form of waves.
Fact Card#2: How does water move below the surface of ocean? The water in the ocean is constantly moving below the water moves in great currents.
Fact Card #3: What are the two types of ocean currents? The two currents are the surface current and the deep current.
Fact Card #4: Define ocean currents. Ocean currents are moving streams of water within the ocean.
Fact Card #5: Define the ‘surface current’. Currents that move on or near the surface of the ocean is called surface current.
Fact Card #6: List the factors which control the surface currents. Three factors that control the surface currents are air currents, earth's rotation and location of continents.
Fact Card#7: Which factors affect the flow of ocean surface water? Global wind belts are a major factor affecting the flow of ocean surface water.

Fact Card#8: How are deep currents generated in ocean?
Difference in the water density due to the temperature gradient moves the water and creates the deep currents.

Fact Card#9: Write down the characteristics of cold and warm water. Cold water is more dense and it sinks and moves warm water is less dense and it rises up.

Fact Card #10: Which ocean currents travel more faster?
Surface currents travel much faster than deep water.

Fact Card #11: Write the factors that cause the deep currents? Deep ocean currents are caused by changes in the temperature salinity (how salty the water is) and density of the water.

Card #12: How do the Sun and the Moon cause the ocean
The greadent pull of the moon and sun is also an important factor to cause ocean currents.

Card #13: Give the definition of wave. A wave is a rhythmic movement that carries energy through matter or space.

Fact Card#14: What are the causes of waves?
Waves are caused by: wind , earthquakes, gravitational force of the moon and the sun.

Fact Card#15: List the characteristics of a wave. Characteristics of  a wave: wavelength, wave height, crest, through the parts of a wave.
Fact Card#16: Write the parameters on which the wave height is dependent. The wave height depends on the wind speed, the distance with the winds blows and the length of the time the wind blows.

Fact Card #17: What happens during tide? The tide is a periodic rise and fall of the sea level under the gravatal pull of the sun and the moon.
Fact Card #18: What do you mean by high tide? High tide - water level is at its highest.
Fact Card #19: What do you mean by low tide? Low tide - water level is at its lowest.
Fact Card #20: How does the Moon’s gravity pull ocean water? The moon's gravity pulls the water onto the earth towards it. The water moves up into a sight bulge the side of the earth that faces the moon.
Fact Card#21: What is the cycle duration of high/low tide? Generally one low tide/high tide cycle takes at every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
Fact Card#22: Define tidal range. The difference in the ocean level between the high tide and the low tide is called a tidal range.
Fact Card#23: When does spring tide occur? Spring tides occur when the earth, sun and moon are in a line.
Fact Card #24: Which tides occur during a full/new moon? Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon.
Fact Card #25: When does neap tide occur? Neap tides occur when the moon and sun are perpendicular to each other.
Fact Card #26: Which tides occur during the quarter moon? Neap tides occur during quarter moons.
Fact Card #27: Which tides are known as weak tides? Why? Neap tides are weak tides as the gravitational forces of the moon of the sun counteract each other, creating weaker tidal forces.
Fact Card#28: Which tides are known as strong tides? Why? Spring tides are strong tides because the moon and the sun's gravitational force combine to create a strong tide.
